Abdullah always knew he wanted to make a meaningful difference as a nurse, but it took finding the right environment to truly unlock his potential. After a challenging start in the public hospital system, Abdullah joined Nexus Hospitals – and everything changed. Today, he is a thriving, highly confident member of our Hobart Day Surgery team. Discover how a supportive rhythm and a workplace built for humans helped him thrive.
From uncertainty to clinical confidence
Smart, adaptable and naturally warm and sociable, Abullah had all the attributes of a great nurse – but his early environment almost broke his passion for the job.
“In my first year in nursing, my grad year of 2022, I was working in a large hospital, and I was not feeling comfortable,” Abdullah recalls. “It got to the point that I was constantly regretting my decision to do nursing. But then, in 2024, I joined Nexus, and it was like, ‘Wow!’ I’d found a workplace where, for the first time, I actually felt confident as a nurse and that I was good at what I do.”
Abdullah joined our Pennant Hills Day Surgery team in Sydney to pursue his interest in gastroenterology, and quickly realised Nexus does things differently. While working, he completed his Registered Nurse qualification with strong support and encouragement from his leaders every step of the way.
“My manager was great about helping me complete it. She told me, ‘Every time you need time off for placements, let me know.’ I was able to complete all of my placements without putting my life or income on hold. You feel so supported here. The surgeons listen to you, they try to action your feedback, and you can ask questions. Everyone is so kind.”
That supportive environment gave Abdullah the space to build a diverse, well-rounded skillset.
Driving world-class care every day
The opportunities to learn didn’t end when Abdullah made the big decision to relocate to our Hobart Day Surgery facility in 2025. If anything, the move turbo-charged his professional growth.
In Hobart, Abdullah has expanded his skills across ophthalmology, plastic surgery and gynaecology nursing. His dedication and growing expertise led to his promotion in June 2026 to Registered Nurse Level 2 Scrub/Scout (Plastics/Dental).
In this role, Abdullah has stepped into a key leadership position, working closely with management on day-to-day operations and acting as the primary point of contact for his team. He collaborates with surgeons to resolve clinical issues, supports the introduction of new equipment, contributes to policy development, and plays an active role in educating and mentoring new team members helping shape the future of the department.
Just as importantly, he’s realised that at Nexus, you are never just a name on a roster – your voice matters.
A supportive team that keeps you strong
Abdullah has worked incredibly hard to build his career, and he credits the down-to-earth Nexus culture for giving him a workplace rhythm he actually looks forward to every day.
“From the first day I started with Nexus, everyone I’ve met in Sydney and Hobart has been so welcoming. Hospital environments can get intense and very busy, and you have to be able to shift focus. But I really enjoy working here. The team is excellent, and you always have access to leaders who are ready to help.”
As for his advice to the next generation of nursing graduates?
“Nexus has a fantastic approach to new grads. You will never feel alone. People are very approachable, right up to the hospital managers. If you are struggling with anything, someone always has your back.”
