Caring for Patients and the Planet: Nexus’ Commitment to Sustainable Healthcare
At Nexus Hospitals, our commitment to delivering the best possible care extends beyond our patients and communities; it includes our responsibility to care for the environment and build a more sustainable future for healthcare.
As part of our ongoing responsible healthcare commitment, we are taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact, improve resource efficiency and support sustainable practices across our hospitals.
Powering a Greener Future
More than 80% of the electricity used across Nexus hospitals comes from renewable energy projects, including wind and solar farms. Several of our hospitals are also generating their own energy through onsite solar panels, while we continue to explore new opportunities to reduce energy consumption at its source.
Nexus has committed to achieving Net Zero by 2040 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with 50% of this reduction targeted by 2035, in alignment with our major shareholder QIC. We are currently well on track to achieving this goal and will publicly report on our progress in line with our statutory commitments as a Group 2 reporter under AASB S2 from 30 June 2027.
This commitment supports our membership of Global Green and Healthy Hospitals, a worldwide network focused on helping hospitals and health systems achieve greater sustainability while contributing to improved environmental and public health outcomes.
Reducing Waste and Supporting Responsible Resource Use
Nexus is committed to reducing waste and increasing the reuse and recycling of resources wherever possible. Our waste providers support our efforts to divert as much waste as possible from landfill, while our teams continue to identify opportunities to minimise waste across our facilities.
Subject to clinical requirements, we also seek to minimise the use of medical and anaesthetic gases that have a detrimental impact on the environment.
Responsible procurement is another important part of our sustainability approach. We recognise that a significant proportion of our emissions come from our supply chain, and we are working to address this by reducing ordering frequency to minimise inbound transportation emissions and, where commercially viable, prioritising products that are manufactured responsibly and have a lower carbon footprint.
Examples of this include the use of biodegradable underpads in our theatres and biodegradable holloware within sterile surgical packs. We also recycle compression stockings and continue to explore new products and suppliers who share our commitment to sustainable healthcare practices.

Supporting the Circular Economy
Nexus is committed to making the most responsible use of resources throughout their lifecycle. Where possible, unwanted equipment is redistributed within the Nexus group to support other hospitals and reduce unnecessary waste.
When equipment is no longer required internally, we seek opportunities to donate items to organisations and charities that can continue to deliver positive community impact. This includes supporting charities affiliated with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, which provide global eye health initiatives across the Asia Pacific region.
Where reuse or donation opportunities are no longer available, equipment is responsibly disposed of as a last resort.
Our People Driving Sustainability Forward
Sustainability is a shared responsibility across Nexus. Our active Green Team, made up of representatives from hospitals across the group, works collaboratively to raise awareness, share initiatives and identify new opportunities to support our ESG goals.
Our Green Team regularly engages with suppliers who share our vision for responsible procurement and sustainable healthcare, helping our teams stay informed about new products, practices and innovations that can make a positive difference.
We are also proud to support our clinicians, including our VMOs and employees, who volunteer their time and expertise to provide medical and surgical support to remote and overseas communities.
Through collaboration, innovation and a commitment to continuous improvement, Nexus Hospitals is helping create a more sustainable future, delivering the best possible care while caring for the world around us.
